    Make Paper Bag Horse Hat

    Your creative buddy says:
"Let's stick together and make this one!"

Step 1: Get your horse hat template ready.

    May need grown-up help
Find the Horse Hat Printout at the bottom of this page. Print it out and carefully cut around the outside edges of the picture. Ask a grown-up for help if you need it.

Step 2: Prepare your paper bag for the headband.

Take your paper bag and remove the handles. Then, carefully rip open the bottom of the bag. Lay the bag flat and cut a strip about 3 inches wide from the top of the bag. Ask a grown-up for help with cutting.

Step 3: Make the headband fit your head.

Open up the strip you just cut. Turn it inside out so that any pictures or words on the bag are on the inside. Wrap the strip around your head to see how big it needs to be. Use tape to stick the ends together to make a headband that fits you perfectly.

Step 4: Cut out the horse shape from the paper bag.

Take the rest of your paper bag. Cut along one of the lines where the bag was folded. Then, fold the bag again along another original fold line so it is flat and has two layers. Place your horse hat printout on top of the folded bag, making sure the ears are at the folded edge.

Step 5: Trace and decorate your horse.

Trace the horse shape from your printout onto the paper bag. Then, carefully cut out the horse shape. Open it up so the inside of the bag is now on the outside. Now it's time to make your horse special! Use markers, pencils, or glitter glue pens to decorate your horse. Give it eyes, a nose, and any patterns you like!

Step 6: Choose how to make your horse's mane: Option 1 (Paper Mane).

If you want a paper mane, take the handles you removed from the paper bag earlier. Cut them into thin strips to look like hair. Then, use tape to stick these paper strips to the inside of your horse's head, along its back, to make a cool mane.

Step 7: Choose how to make your horse's mane: Option 2 (Yarn Mane).

    May need grown-up help
If you want a yarn mane, ask a grown-up to help you punch three holes at the top of your horse's head. Then, cut twelve pieces of yarn, each about 13 inches long. Take two pieces of yarn and push them through one hole until the middle of the yarn is in the hole. Tie a knot to hold the yarn in place. Do this for all three holes to make a fluffy yarn mane!

Step 8: Attach the horse to your headband.

Open up your decorated horse. Use tape to attach the bottom edges of the horse to each side of the headband you made. Make sure the horse stands up nicely on top of the headband, like a little teepee. Now your horse hat is ready to wear!
